Just a quirky girl from Toronto who loves anything whimsical. I'm a sucker for unique patterns, prints and textures. I'm currently teaching English in Okinawa, Japan. I enjoy experiencing new cultures, meeting new people and listening to their stories.
These are the cutest Sushi Plushies ever! This little shop in Kyoto, near Kinkaku-ji, is called The Chiri-Men-Craft Museum. It has the most adorable things...I wanted to buy everything!
This acrylic painting was inspired by Prison Break, the show. Yes, I was obsessed. I created this second year of University, so about 2006. I can't remember the dimensions but it's pretty big in size. This was made for class and the assignment was to make a painting that tells a narrative. I guess I figured that each prisoner had their own narrative & story to tell- what there life was like before prison, what they did that led them to getting locked up. I also painted prison cell bars in the foreground which makes it appear that the viewer, too, is in prison. So there are an abundance of narratives going on at once. OoooOh makes you ponder. :P
A close friend of mine moved away to Hong Kong when we were in grade 4. We were best friends since Kindergarten so it was a pretty sad time. However, we did write to each other quite frequently. To this day, we both have boxes full of old letters from each other. Recently we reunited in Hong Kong and we were reading all the old letters I sent her. We were pretty dumb kids! Well I was...I mean I couldn't even spell noodles! "Nuddles"! My cheesiness gets me every time! Some things never change...I'm still incredibly cheesy. Anyway, I'm glad we've still kept in touch all this time! She's my oldest friend!
The Hill of Dugongs in Northern Okinawa. This was actually one of the first places I visited in Okinawa. A friend brought me here and told me it was his favourite place on the island. I can see why; it was so quiet and peaceful there and the view overlooking the sea was just breathtaking. I’m so grateful that he shared it with me. They say if you’re lucky, you can see the dugongs (manatees) swimming in the sea. I looked very very hard but no luck!
At a store in Hong Kong called GOD. These dishes appear to be dirty but don't be deceived...the leftover food is just painted on! That's pretty funny...
Some portraits I've done over the years. All of the paintings are acrylic on canvas or wooden panel. And then there's that random sketch of Wentworth Miller! Oh my Prison Break days!
The hotel we stayed at in Hangzhou China. The restaurant had an outdoor patio overlooking the river. There were many beautiful fish, ducks and swans. The ducks were routinely fed. The man on the boat puts food on the wooden platforms that you see in the distance.
Mail from the future?!? It's the Lake House! Well actually, it's just a cool concept for a cafe. Two summers ago when I visited China, we went to this neat cafe in Suzhou called Momi Cafe. I really recommend you check this place out if you ever find yourself in Suzhou. Not only can you purchase beverages or food like in any other cafe, but you can also write post cards and have them delivered to your future self or anyone in the future for that matter! This is how it works- first off they have a wall full of artsy postcards (that's actually one of the biggest challenges...picking a postcard- because they're all so darn cute), then after you fill out the card and write the address of whom you wish to send it to, you slip it into a box with a year labelled on it. This will be the year you want your postcard to be mailed, You can specify exact dates on the card. From what I remember, you can have it mailed to the person anytime from the present to 20 years later. It's such a fascinating idea! They also sell adorable stationary, I bought the sketchbook on the far left. My cousin and I wanted to open a cafe like this in Toronto...but we're not sure if this idea would fly there! What would you write to your future self if you had the chance?
